What's the latest here at
Emerald Park Farm???
And we're back to milking again now that the show season is over.
What a great time to think. The girls and I have solved a lot of the worlds problems over the milk bucket. Right now I'm milking Perfect (Dun to Perfection) and Bonnie (Cinnabon). Perfect hadn't been milked since 2014. Both slipped right into the swing of it.
Our thought session lately has been conformation. So many people focus on color or polled thinking that all Dexters are created equal -- NOT SO! When milking, you have to have room for your bucket. I'm not talking animal height. This is about udder conformation and rear end conformation. Teat spacing, teat size, a nice tidy udder with strong support. A wide rear end from top to bottom. Wide hips followed by straight legs set wide apart right to the ground so the bucket has a resting place and is easier to hit when you are at the rear teats. Hooves that are high in the heel setting them up on their toes rather than underslung setting their hind feet up towards their front end to far underneath their bellies.
I guess I don't think of disposition any more because I've come so far with my breeding program weeding out the "crabbies". My girls have just become to easy to train and willing to let down I've began taking them for granted.
We have 19 brood cows in production as of 2016. Twelve of them are trained to milk. Four of them are first timers to be trained in 2017.
Imagine all the problems we will be solving!
